Delta School District trustees voted Tuesday night (April 27) to cut staff to help address its $4 million shortfall.

A total of 33 full time jobs, including 16.55 teaching positions are being axed.

In addition, a shade over 15 support staff jobs and one administrative position are being removed. Combined with cuts to supplies, a $311,359 cut to special programs, and utilizing $900,000 in cash reserves, the board was able to balance its budget. Read more

At a special meeting Tuesday evening (April 20), teacher, librarian, and custodial and trade representatives appealed to Delta trustees to make changes to their proposed budget cuts.

The Delta school district faces a shortfall of about $4 million for the 2010/2011 school year.

The district plans to cut costs and increase revenue to make up $3.1 million, and use $900,000 from district reserves to balance the budget, which is required by law. Read more

More than 33 full-time employees – about half of them teachers – could face the axe if proposed budget recommendations go ahead in the Delta School District.

The Province: Jobs cut to offset $4M deficit

The Delta school district isn’t contemplating school closures but almost 34 full-time positions will be eliminated due to a $4 million budget shortfall.

The district made its proposed budget for the 2010/11 school year public yesterday, which includes reductions to teaching positions, special needs support as well as clerical and CUPE support staff.

“These are not decisions we make easily or would want to go to unless we had to. In special programs they want to make cuts in different areas and not to have great impact on one particular group of kids,” said acting superintendent Garnet Ayres. Read article

South Delta Leader: Budget positive, but problems remain for school district

The Delta School District got a little bit more funding from the province than expected, but it likely won’t be enough to avoid cuts.

Preliminary budget figures released by the provincial government Monday indicate that Delta School District will receive approximately $126 million to operate schools in the 2010-2011 year. That would be a rise of around $2 million over the 2009-2010 budget. Read more
