Tom Fletcher’s campaign to smear and denigrate B.C. public schools continues in his recent column (School’s out for teacher tantrums, Comment, June 23).
Fletcher’s refusal to admit that B.C.’s public schools are purposely underfunded by the B.C. Liberals proves how out of touch he is.
Most citizens in B.C. do not believe the Minister of Education when she repeatedly drones on with the mantra of “highest funding ever.” Fletcher dismisses the Vancouver Board of Trustees for playing politics around funding, while conveniently downplaying the fact that all of BC’s school boards are saying the same thing about underfunding as Vancouver.
In the district where I teach (Sooke School District), our enrolment is increasing, yet we are still having to make cuts. When you factor in the cost for all-day kindergarten and the negotiated salary increase, the Sooke district is losing $200 per student giving us a $1.8-million deficit. Read more
