North Shore Outlook: West Van makes cuts to school bus service

This year fewer West Vancouver students are riding school busses.

In anticipation of cuts, West Vancouver School District has culled its transportation services.

The B.C. Ministry of Education is reviewing its transportation funding formula. Although the overall dollar figure going into school transportation services may not change, the way it is distributed likely will, the district’s superintendent Geoff Jopson said.

The district is estimating it will see a $300,000 reduction in transportation funding, as money is reallocated to rural areas. Read more

More of West Vancouver’s schoolchildren will be pounding the pavement this September after a decision by the school district to trim back its bus services.

Parents of students heading to a West Vancouver school in September will have to fill out an online request for transportation in order to register their child for bus service. To be eligible, students must be inside their school’s catchment area but outside the new “walk limits.” The walk limit is four kilometres for kindergarten to Grade 3 students and 4.8 kilometres for Grade 4 to 12 students. Having anticipated a significant shortfall this year, West Vancouver School District let out a sigh of relief when it escaped the red.

“We were able to maintain our staffing positions,” the district’s superintendent Geoff Jopson said. “But we did have to cut our supplies.”

The cuts will effect equipment allotted to schools and areas such as facility vehicle leases and learning resources. Read more
